Heart Strings

Everyday you wake up with webs in your eyes
and strings on your appendages.
You move and move
spin and spin
and add yet strands and strands
until you’re caught
in a multicolored tangle
that at times you let them
reach your neck
tightening
tighter
tighter
tighter
until all you can hear is that faint
Lub
… then the countdown to nothing begins
and you’re plunged in a state of numbing
e m p t i n e s s
and all of you is scattered.
But in that ground zero state,
instinct kicks in
forcing you to release your restraint,
walls collapse
strings unwind
and everything rushes back
you are you again
whole
as you don’t really have a choice
at something deemed involuntary
…Dub
And the cycle starts over
Lub-dub, Lub-dub, Lub-dub
Everyday is a battle of pressures,
forces,
gravity,
fought by a fist-sized muscle
willingly,
without second thought.
For a small organ,
always fighting for you,
why keep giving it a reason to stop it’s beat?
